I’m increasingly persuaded that implantable biosensors and neural interfaces should provide a secure, machine-readable local export of their raw measurements—not just vendor labels such as stress, attention, or intent. A neural interface records weak, noisy electrical signals, not intent itself; filtering, calibration, electrode condition, and signal drift all shape the eventual interpretation.
Raw data is not automatically useful or safe. It can be clinically sensitive, expensive to store or transmit, and difficult to interpret without metadata. But derived scores can conceal calibration changes, support profiling, and make it hard to audit an algorithm or move to another device. My preferred baseline would be authenticated, read-only local export with timestamps, channel metadata, calibration versions, filters, and quality indicators. Deletion should apply to the user-accessible copy, while safety-critical records remain governed separately.
Should raw local access and user-controlled deletion be mandatory, even when manufacturers argue that they threaten safety or usability? Is this essential user control, or an unsafe abstraction leak? Examples and counterarguments welcome.
