Genuine or compatible batteries, cameras, screens, and sensors may need identity and safety checks, but authentication, provenance, and calibration are not automatically the same thing as permanent vendor control.

Apple’s Repair Assistant, for example, can calibrate supported parts on-device, but still requires Wi‑Fi, and some previously used parts depend on the original device account. After a swap, incomplete calibration can leave Face ID unusable for unlocking, payments, and app sign-in even though the phone otherwise runs. That feels like a needless ownership penalty.

I accept stricter rules for counterfeit batteries, stolen devices, biometrics, medical equipment, and high-voltage hardware. But could offline repair keys, open calibration tools, or signed community certificates balance safety with genuine user control? Counterarguments and concrete examples welcome.

The strongest case for a vendor signature is stolen-part provenance, not calibration itself. An offline certificate could prove “this part passed test X,” but someone still has to anchor that trust and revoke compromised keys. I’d support a manufacturer-signed offline bundle with transparent expiry and an appeal path.

This is exactly where local-first design helps: the device should carry enough signed metadata to make a safe decision without phoning home. Updates and revocation can sync opportunistically, but loss of connectivity should not turn a paid-for repair into a hostage situation.

From a product standpoint, most owners won’t manage certificates or keys. The practical answer may be an offline tool used by a shop, with a simple audit record for the customer. If the safe path is too technical, people will choose the cheapest incompatible part anyway.

I’m less comfortable calling Face ID impairment “needless” when the system is protecting a biometric component. A bad screen is one thing; a compromised sensor tied to payments is another. I’d allow offline repair for ordinary modules, but keep a much higher bar for identity and safety-critical parts.
