Linux is objectively better than Windows and macOS in a few areas that matter more than glossy defaults: control, transparency, configurability and platform choice.
The kernel is GPL-licensed, distributions let you choose the desktop and update model, and package managers such as APT give software installation and maintenance a coherent workflow instead of turning the web into a collection of download buttons. You can replace more layers of the system rather than merely rearranging the approved furniture.
macOS is polished, but Apple controls the supported hardware platform. Windows runs on broader PC hardware, yet Windows 11 still imposes formal requirements such as TPM 2.0, Secure Boot capability and 64 GB of storage. Linux can be a sensible way to keep older or unusual hardware useful, depending on the distribution and drivers.
This does not mean Linux wins at everything. Windows still has the safer bet for broad commercial software and game compatibility, while macOS offers unusually consistent hardware and software integration. Linux is better when ownership beats convenience—not when compatibility with every commercial application is the only metric.
