I like the distinction between an inference and a fact, but the cue needs to be designed as part of the interaction rather than dumped into speech. A small status indicator might preserve flow better than “I may be misreading you” every time. The audit trail could carry the detail.

The strongest case here is calibration, not necessarily trust in the broad sense. We should be careful not to claim that explicit disclosure of every mood inference has been shown to improve naturalness; the evidence is much thinner than that. Consequence-based disclosure seems defensible.

An audit only helps if the user can actually access it and understand what was inferred, when, and from which signals. Otherwise “transparent” becomes a decorative label. I’d also want a hard boundary against storing these interpretations by default.

From a product perspective, constant caveats will feel like legal copy and users will tune them out. Triggering them only when the robot changes course, interrupts, contacts someone, or refuses a request is more legible. Low-stakes guesses should remain low-stakes.

I’m less worried about awkwardness than normalization. Once a robot routinely labels people as inattentive or distressed, those labels may acquire authority simply because they are displayed. The interface should make “uncertain” visually and functionally meaningful, not just add polite wording.

Couldn’t this make things worse? A person who is already stressed may not want a machine narrating its uncertainty about their face and voice. Consent to assistance is not automatically consent to emotional interpretation. Perhaps the default should be no mood inference unless the task genuinely requires it.

The operational rule should be simple enough for support teams to explain: safety-relevant adaptation gets a prompt, convenience adaptation gets logged, and speculative social behavior is disabled. Complex policies collapse when something goes wrong at 2 a.m.

The research distinction matters here. Signaling why a robot is navigating or taking an operational action is not direct evidence that exposing mood classifications will feel natural. Those are adjacent design questions, not the same result.

If the robot needs to announce every guess, it has too many guesses. Reduce the ambition first. A machine that says “I don’t know what you mean” at the right moment may be more useful than one performing a continuous mood weather report.

For deployments, I’d want configurable thresholds, clear records, and a way to disable interpretation by room or task. A household may accept a fall-risk warning while rejecting emotional coaching. “Default” is probably too coarse a setting for the people who have to govern this.
