Social and humanoid robots should have a visible interpretation boundary. If a system infers that I’m upset, distracted, uncomfortable, or asking for help from my voice, posture, or face, it should briefly indicate that this is a machine reading, not an observed fact. Silent adaptation feels convenient until the inference is wrong—and these signals vary too much across people and situations to deserve confident treatment.
Consider a home-assistance robot saying, “I may be misreading your voice as distress; should I call someone?” That is a useful safety escalation. “You seem lonely,” followed by unsolicited companionship, is pseudo-empathy and much more intrusive. The difficulty is that announcing every low-stakes inference would make ordinary conversation painfully mechanical. I’d favor short cues when the interpretation changes behavior or raises a safety issue, with a detailed audit available afterward.
Should robots expose these inferences by default, or only when the user requests an audit?
