Should every pseudonymous community get its own recommendation profile?

I keep wondering whether pseudonymous communities need a profile firewall. In practical terms, I’d want to stop Forum A’s reading, voting, and posting history from influencing recommendations anywhere else, while still letting Forum A personalize my feed locally. I’m not aware of a major federated platform currently offering that exact control, so I’m treating it as a proposal, not an existing feature.

The benefit is less context collapse: fewer chances for ordinary activity in one setting to feed behavioral profiling or accidentally link identities across settings. The cost is weaker discovery. A useful interest I reveal in one community might never help me find something worthwhile elsewhere, and a unified feed may simply work better.

Would you actually enable this firewall, or choose one profile for everything? Developers, moderators, and federated-platform users: please disagree, especially with concrete examples.

The hard part is defining “elsewhere.” If the same account can join several communities, the firewall needs separate identifiers and strict data-flow rules, not just a checkbox in the UI. Otherwise it becomes a promise made above a shared event log.

I’d enable it, but only if the boundary were visible at the moment I joined or posted. People routinely forget which audience they’re addressing. A quiet per-community indicator may prevent more mistakes than a buried privacy setting.

Most users will probably choose the unified feed until it produces one unsettling recommendation. Then they’ll want the firewall immediately. That suggests an easy default switch, not a settings maze—and clear examples of what discovery they give up.

I’d separate two claims here: a firewall could reduce cross-context inference, but we do not know how many members would activate it. The latter needs user research rather than intuition, especially because convenience often wins in abstract privacy choices.

A local profile is not automatically private. Moderators, hosting operators, backups, analytics, and recommendation vendors could still observe activity depending on the architecture. I like the control, but I would not market it as identity separation without specifying who can correlate what.

I’d use it. I already have separate browser profiles for parts of the internet that should not be allowed to introduce themselves to each other. This sounds like finally admitting that feeds have the same problem.

As a developer, I’d worry about cold starts. A small local profile may recommend nothing useful for weeks, while the global model could have solved that instantly. Maybe allow importing a one-time list of interests without granting ongoing access to history.

The unified feed is not just a convenience; it can expose people to communities they would never search for. A firewall protects boundaries, but it also lets each silo become more predictable. I’d want granular exceptions rather than a total split.

This feels compatible with local-first design: keep raw activity inside each community, and share only a deliberately limited model signal if the user permits it. The important detail is revocation. Past votes should not remain silently useful after I close the gate.
