I’m generally pro open-source lab tools: cheap, accessible software can help community labs and students learn without institutional bioinformatics infrastructure. But DNA-design platforms make the handoff to synthesis providers feel different. Should a desktop app or cloud workspace screen sequences and require a traceable user identity before export?
Providers already screen orders and verify customers, while split or short fragments make relying only on the final order uncomfortable. Still, centralized screening could expose designs, create records, or let a platform decide who counts as legitimate.
A compromise I could support is local pre-screening with encrypted sequence data and a cryptographically signed result, letting a provider verify screening without receiving plaintext. It won’t solve every governance problem. For community labs, should screening be mandatory, optional, or designed differently?
